Water Writing With Waves

Japanese researches in Akishima Laboratories working with Osaka University made great strides in the field of writing on water. Why would someone want to do this? Theme parks and hotels like the Bellagio would use this to make water shows to entertain their patrons.

The device consists of 50 water wave generators encircling a cylindrical tank 1.6 meters in diameter and 30 cm deep (about the size of a backyard kiddie pool). The wave generators move up and down in controlled motions to simultaneously produce a number of cylindrical waves that act as pixels. The pixels, which measure 10 cm in diameter and 4 cm in height, are combined to form lines and shapes. The device is capable of spelling out the entire roman alphabet, as well as some simple kanji characters.

ono Transmita 2.4GHz Wireless Audio

If you're looking for an easy way to get audio from your laptop to your sound system, take a look at the Oono Transmita. The unit comes with two pieces, one to plug into a headphone/line-out jack on your laptop or digital audio player, the other to plug into your line in on your stereo.

The wireless works on the 2.4GHz band, the same band as your WiFi and some cordless phones, and has a range of up to 50 meters (164 feet). The range is most likely less if you go through walls, but should be enough for transmitting audio from room to room.

The Transmita costs £34.99 ($64) and comes with "2.4G wireless stereo dongle and receiver, 2 power adaptor sets, a USB cable, and 2 audio cables."

Skype readies four WiFi phones for VoIPing public

We've been waiting on Netgear's WiFi Skype phone for quite a while now, but what we didn't know is that it won't be only one of its kind for long. Skype now has four WiFi phones in the wings, the F1PP000GN-SK from Belkin (pictured), Edge-Core's WM4201, SMC's WSKP100, and of course Netgear's SPH101. From the looks of things, Netgear's entrant, which is due this month, will be the priciest at $300, but Belkin should follow in August with a quite similar offering for a much more acceptable $189. We're pretty short on details for the rest, but we should know more soon. Like the SPH101, all of the phones will allow you to manage a buddy list, and make calls from a WiFi connection without a need for a PC in between.

Consumers unaware of their phone's make and model

My mobile is...a...um...

Mobile phone operators are missing an opportunity to sell high-cost multimedia mobile services because more than half their customers don't have a clue what phone they are using, according to research.

A survey of 761 mobile phone users aged 15 and over, commissioned from Ipsos MORI by LogicaCMG, found that 49 per cent of mobile phone users didn't know what model they use. A further nine per cent were unaware of the make.

Services firm LogicaCMG said this could mean mobile operators are losing money. If they knew what phones their customers were using, they would know what services they could try and flog them.

It might also suggest that mobile phone operators are not doing enough to track the make and model of users' phones.Or it could mean all the punters want to do is talk to somebody.

Noise Masking CD

Sleep easier. Kill the neighbor's...noise
Bothered by loud music or noisy neighbors?

Bugged by bass boom?
Got a noisy neighbor?

We can help!

"I used to be irritated by loud thumping music from my party animal neighbors a couple of times a month, now all I do is turn on the BoomBuster CD and go right back to sleep! Thanks!" Cory M. - Boulder, CO

Originally created by University of Colorado PHD Candidate Daniel Webb, this CD was created for his own use to mask the sound of a neighbor who had a bad habit of playing music at all hours of the night.

Problem

Bass boom noise, along with dog barking, is the most complained about noise in the world. It is also very difficult to mask, because it penetrates building materials much better than high frequencies, and if you've found this web site, you probably already know that earplugs are useless against bass boom noise.

White noise generators are commonly used in commercial office buildings, and many different sites on the web sell all kinds of noise-masking products by generating white noise, imitating babbling brooks, whirling fans, and so on. The bass boom rides right under most of these products.

Solution

Our CD is a specially filtered white noise maximizing the noise in the low frequency range where obnoxious bass noise lives (around 50-300 Hz). Because most normal stereos put out less sound as the frequency goes down, it is also filtered to increase the volume of sound as frequency goes down to counter this affect.

Our real-world usage show that this CD will mask low-level bass boom without even being noticeable, and mask moderate-level bass boom when turned up loud enough that the noise is noticeable. High-level bass boom is so permeating that no product except an active noise-canceling headset (such as worn by pilots) will help.

This CD has a low frequency rumble designed to mask bass boom from stereos. Use against any music! Rap. Rock. Techno. Loud TV or talking... anything! Developed especially for low frequency repetitive noises (boom, boom, boom). Also works great for other types of noise as well.

Very easy to use, all you need is a CD player.

Benefits of the BoomBuster CD:

* Kill the neighbor's stereo thud
* Drown out passing boom cars
* Cover up loud TV and music
* Mask loud talking
* Sleep easier
* Help concentration

BoomBuster Noise Masking CD, http://boombuster.com/
"Easy Button"

Hacking the Staples "Easy Button"

Further proving that nothing in life is truly easy, or at least venting some pent-up frustrations at that certain office supply store, Al Cohen has turned the once cute "Easy Button" to the dark side. Although it showcases a pessimistic demeanor at first glance, the evil button is blackest at heart; by replacing the innards with a recording circuit and a 1/8-inch line-in jack, you can channel your angst into the device and unleash your rage with a simple smack. If hard times catch up to you while away from your mic, you can record directly into the button for instant gratification. Al was kind enough to provide step-by-step instructions of how to create your own in hopes of dispelling the myth that business is easy, and if you can't decide if it's worthwhile, take a peek at his in action.

http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/19/hacking-the-staples-easy-button/
